Correct, works with memory cards (16 bit unfortunately), a few network cards
(NE1000 compatible)
and some modems.

There is a IDE port futher to the left, the few pins nr the expansion slot
is a clock
port.

Usually timing problems with some expansions.

Not usually, my 1200 didn`t have it wired that way.

I used to have a Blizzard 1230IV, it had a full 030 with MMU and could
except
upto 128Mb of Fast RAM and space for an FPU and SCSI expansion (which was
extra).

Allows to to add further floppy drives for DF1, DF2 and DF3 and can be high
density
ones such as the XL Power!

You need 3-4 things set up:
1. Your login details ie username or hostname and correct password (supplied
by /ISP or
yourself)
2. Your email address.
3. The name of the SMTP _and_ POP3 servers eg. mail.<ispname>.com or
whatever.

You need a bootable Workbench disk with CD drivers installed
before wiping your hard disk. Also, you need to install WB3.1
before installing 3.5 (both are on the CDROM).

The Power Towers look very good and plenty of accessories
for it. Accelerators are getting cheaper. Go for an 040/060 or
a PPC card (if they are available). 030s aren`t worth it.

We do what I do, save up a bit more. I spend a grand on a PC
and still have enough for the essential software I want.

These are disk images, you need a program such as ADF2Disk or transdisk
and such to write the image back to an Amiga disk. Then copy the files from
the disk to your HD!
The utils are on my web site below

Subject: [afb] re: Help! I've shot my IDE HD!
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
I think I've broke my IDE HD! I am using an A4000T with a SCSI HD and an
IDE HD. Today I've installed the DirectSCSI version of PFS2 to the RDBs,
I have been using the normal version of PFS2 before, but I was told the
DirectSCSI version is ever so slightly faster. It all went very well,
and all my SCSI partitions are now working just like before, so I went
on installing the thing onto the IDE HD (the PFS2 manual says the
DirectSCSI version works with A4000 IDE as well)
After I've added the filesystem to the RDB, I rebooted, but now my Amiga
seems to be trapped in a loop: it recognizes the IDE HD and crashes,
recognizes the IDE HD andcrashes... etc.
Does anyone here know how I can repair my drive? I know that since I've
very likely destroyed the RDB I will have to reformat the drive, but
currently not even this is possible because my Amiga won't start as long
as the drive is connected... Disabling all partitions in the early
startup menu does not help, the RDB seems to be read nevertheless...
Another weird problem is that since I removed the IDE HD, every access
to hypercom30z.library crashes my system. I had this problem before, but
a ramlib stack patch resolved it. Now it won't work under any
circumstance (NO patches (apart from P96), ramlib stack at 16 kB). This
is extremely odd because I can't see any link between a Harddrive and a
Serial board...
------------------
The pfs2ds filesystem is mainly used for large hard disks, its no faster
than
normal pfs2. Try booting off a floppy disk and run HDtoolbox, or you can
remove
the pfs2 from the SCSI hard disk as well (use the standard version instead).

Well there was missing a comma (,) in the sentence. What I meant was that=

I know that as I know that I am using only a half-decent one ;-) . What I=

Well not quite, but as I don't get to read the mail too often these
days I really enjoyed the sudden outbreak of spats. And without any
input from Sealey.
I won't express an opinion on either argument, but would emphasise
that I *really* enjoyed reading the threads.
Sod it. Actually I will.
As I struggle to keep up I rarely post these days as I know I will be
out of date which seems only courteous.
And likewise if Mash can confirm that he has made similar comments
face to face with a group of around 800 people, most of who haven't
yet spoken to him, rather than with the remoteness of a mailing list
to protect him, I'll back him to do the same here. Otherwise cut it

Normally I'm not scared to do a little DIY electronics, but I literally have
no cash atm,and cannot bear the thought of losing my A1200, or the PPC,
especially with the BVIsion supposedly on the way. They should be appearing
soon, shouldn't they?
The bloke at White Knight said they'd be out at the end of January, and
then they were delayed a few weeks...

That might not seem like much, but it is available in the UK, as well

Noooooo! Then you`d spend all your time playing the free classics instead
of spending money on new (or still available to buy) games.

Games: no. Utilities: why bother, they`ll have been updated. Full
versions of serious Applications: not legal to do it. AF would have only
been granted permission to distribute them once.
> just a thought :-)
I`m all for a retro games feature. With a demo on the CD if available. But
only if it is still possible to *purchase* the game. And as Ben pointed
out when I brought this up before, that could be a problem. Having said
that, if only 40 people followed up the phase 3 offer, maybe it could work
for one or two games.

So I was spot on, as usual. Since you admit you've received 2 of those
mails, the question is, how come you didn't work out from those mails (and
the discussion of similar mails on this list...although I guess you're
excused on that one since you don't read every mail that's posted on here)
that the posting limit applies to everyone?
Aside from the above, if it were true that the posting limit doesn't apply
to everyone (and on the assumption that you believed that to be the case),
why do you feel you have the right to deprive those it does apply to from
posting?
Martin, not indulging in judicious snipping...unlike some.

Maybe....
My "ramlib failed" problem was happening everytime the IPrefs command
was executed in the startup sequence.
It was fixed by putting IDEfix back into my startup sequence.
Also, by default the ramlib has only a 2k stack IIRC? It may be
crashing 'cos it's using up all the stack. Have you tried one of the
"ramlib stack fix" programs? ( ksc_GrowStack.lha maybe? )

Hi
Ok, I whole geartedly apologise, I never meant to offend anyone by any
comments that I've ever made, Its just the way which me and my friends (yes
some of them are...) talk to each other. And we dont secretly stick one
finger up at each other when they turn their back as someone suggested. Nor
am I blind to the fact that people do get hurt by stuff that people say.
But nothing I say or I'm sure anyone on this list says is ever meant to be
hurtful to someone else.
Sorry again

Well it really does depend on what you're doing with it. Preloading some gfx

as checking what versions of a browser someone is using, then loading a

The faster the connection, the better the quality. A low quality mp3 could
be downloaded in 5 minutes say, but lets say the mp3 lasts 10 minutes, by
streaming you can listen as you download rather than having to wait 5
minutes, then start listening

I think there`s a fair chance the postage may cost more than that once you
take insurance into consideration too. There are other possible
considerations too: Eyetech may be buying in smaller quantities,
instruction translation costs, greater expenses to see if it was worth
selling, differences in the costs of advertising....

Er, yeah I suppose so. But at least with FTP you need a username and

suppose the server can do stuff to your 'puter?

Alas I've tried that, and Netscape still insists on leaving a tiny gap
between celss :-( I've come to work around this though by using nested
tables, which is a solution but not the ideal one (as is most often the
case).

Nowthen,
Has anyone else on this list got FoundationDC?
I am having problems getting the CD Audio to work. I have set it up (In
foundation prefs) to use:
atapi.device unit=2
If i click on the test button the cd music starts playing so every thing
seems alright. If I then run the game and look at the
Load/Save/Restart/Quit Menu it says that it is using the CD for game data
not for CD-Audio
Kind regards

Using a 56k modem with initial connect speeds of around 48000kbps, it
still takes several seconds to download each frame making most webcams
pretty useless. mp3s are the same, and considering how slow anything
but an 060 or PPC is at this kinda stuff, it doesn't really work at
all.

That's because the limit is only reached after your bedtime. If the limit
is reached on any given day, it's always reached late in the evening rather
than during the day for the simple reason that the limit applies to the 24
hours that starts with 8AM GMT.
> Put your foot in it again have we?
Yeah right, Mash, as long as you're happy in your own little world where
arguments are won by not replying to any of your opponents points or indeed
by not replying at all.
For your benefit, I'll just point out that I said "no one could post as much
as you do and not have had one or two" to Alan, not you. You may post more
or less than Alan, but unless it's exactly the same amount as he posts, it
is not "as much as" - that statement doesn't even apply to you so don't be
quite so quick to take offence next time, you irritating moron ;p

Since you arent quoting anything, I dont know which part of the thread
you are replying to... but the problem is, even if you do
FRAMEBORDER="0", the gap between the frames is STILL there! The actual
border is just invisible. The question was how to get rid of the empty
space, and FRAMESPACING="0" was the working solution.

Actually, this might not be the fault of the table layout. Many browsers
generate a bank area around a picture, and if you dont restrict the
size of a table cell (with HEIGHT and WIDTH) it gets stretched to
accomodate the blank area. Try putting VSPACE="0" and HSPACE="0" to the
IMG tag, this could help.
Note, this is just a theory. :)

Using JS to build the page on the fly each time is incredibly
inefficient. Why not use an HTML creator with macros so you save the
time but still generate static HTML?

Are they both doing the same, or is V saving time by not executing all
of the JS?

How can anyone advise on that when they don't know what JavaScript
you're using? There are plenty of people here with an Amiga that you
consider suitable to view the pages, but they can't help if you don't
let them see what you're doing.

^H stands for CTRL-H which is the code for the 'Delete' key. Therefore,
people who know this can use the ^H as a substitute in email, for humourous
effect.
BTW an old version of Pine under unix on the uni system at York only
inserted the ^H into the email as far as the user could see. So some
poople at uni who didn't know this would press delete again to get rid of
the rogue ^H characters, which inserted another ^H! Much hilarity ensued
.. honest! ;-)

I know this is horrendously off-topic, but can I recommend Crosse &
Blackwell Snackpots. Like Pot Noodles, but they taste like food.
Proper spaghetti bolgnese, potato with brocolli and croutons. My
lunchtimes are built around them. Except when we've got kebabs and
that in the freezer, of course :)

i have always bought new games for the amiga even turbo racer 3d :( but
a lot of old games are excellent (Robocop , Bubble-bobble , chaseHQ)
which should be sold again but AFAIK no shops around here or advertised
in AF sells old 1988-94"s amiga games.
IMO a lot of old games are more playable than some of the new games

as i said before i did not look at the legal side of things but most
amiga users may want to see the history of AF but i doubt it.

most old games are hard to get hold off and as for the adf files on the
net they are hacked versions or have viruses in them which i do not like =
to use. =
FINAL IDEA : AF why don't you do a theme called "AF Past Present Future"
which includes Pictures , reviews , etc etc =

That is a possibility. But being curious of what can be done I decided to=

I asume they do the same thing since the JS code for both is the same. Un=

Well, to be honnest I did not want to `plug' the d**n thing since content=
is not finished and a lot of tuning still has to be done (like spell-che=
cking and correcting some of the images and little mistakes in the lay-ou=
t). But for those who are curious here it is:

with the most offending parts being at:

and at:

Note: I did spot an error today which has been corrected but, sadly, did =

Ah, a few years back they'd be saying theirs too many /2d/ platform ga=

Well, if you ask me it'd be the same if, say, PC's had died instead. T=

you type something, then go to delete it, it comes up as ^H when it's se=

Of cource, I think it's just an excuse to swear! Take this example for=

Did /I/ swear? nope. Do /you/ infer swear words in your head? yep. ;)

I'd think it would be more difficult then that, I mean, what about the=

Hi all,
Am I the only person to be having loads of trouble with Fusion.
Specifically, I cannot get it to use CGX drivers, since they don't
seem to work under CGX4, and the patches on www.vgr.com cant be used,
since they need Fusion V3.1 drivers to be patched, and the lowest I
found was V3.2 and 3.3. The CGX4 driver (well supposed driver) on the
AFCD doen't like CGXv4 at all. So I'm a biut stuffed.
That, and Fusion doesn't seem to like my SS Hardfiles (since when I
installed it I couldn't afford to set up a partition for the Mac), so
assuming I ever got Fusion to run, I'd still be a bit stuffed.
Oh well.. never mind eh... At least SS works for me =8*)

Subject: [afb] Bill McEwen video conference...
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Hi all,
The South West Amiga Group has been `approved' to take part in the
interactive video conference with Bill McEwen on March the 1st.
The problems are:
1) We are suddenly in need of another venue for this, which we are
looking into (possibly in Bristol).
2) The conference starts at 8pm CST - 2am GMT...:(
3) We have to find a way to pay for 3 128k ISDN lines for an hour (ouch)
Bearing in mind No. 3 above, we may have to charge ~5UKP entry, although
part of the costs may be paid for us.
So, assuming that it's financially viable, we can find somewhere that
will host us at 2am (and people don't mind staying up that late), etc.,
would anyone be interested in attending?
Basically, I don't want to be phoning around and arranging a venue,
etc., if it's not going to be worth it, so I'm after a bit of
feedback...

Hi Oliver,

I bought one of the Power PCMCIA kits a few weeks ago. The cc reset fix is
just a small board (supplied by Power) with 3 wires coming of it which need
to be soldered to one of the Amiga chips. It's a bit fiddly, but I managed
it.
If you don't do the fix it should still work but after each reboot you will
need to unplug the card and then plug it back in. If you forget the system
doesn't see the network.

Thanks Alan, that was exactly what I needed to know. I didn't want to go out
and buy a network card without the fix only to find that there was some
really annoying problem (like having to take it out every reset) I guess
this means I will have to stop being a cheapskate and get the fix too :(

Ouch, thats bad news... Ive built pages that depend on cells having NO

While on the subjcet of HTML... does any Amiga browser have CSS support

Well, it applies to frames too (at least on Ibrowse and V) - it took me
a while to realise this. I had a picture 50 pixels high and a frame of
an equal size - and the browsers wanted to scroll them around.

Oh yeah. Next you'll be telling me that you love me. I haven't got a cheque
from you at all! Did you make sure you made it out to the initials of my
organisation: "Commodore Amiga Self-Help"? :)

Yes, but the only thing I fancied off his tray was the flapjack. The salad
came from M&S...

Hi all,
Could some kind soul out there e-mail me a copy of the software that comes
with the Squirrel SCSI interface (the plain one, not the Surf) because
I'm at college and my disk is at home. I just bought the CD32 version of
Cannon Fodder and need to install the CD32 software that came with the
Squirrel to be able to play it.
Cheers,
Mark_H

I usually get no gap in Netscape, or any other browser for that matter,
when I set a table up like so:
<TABLE WIDTH="whatever" CELLSPACING="0" BORDER="0" CELLPADDING="0">
When you remove the border attribute the gap returns. In fact, I always
have border set to 0 because of the ugly nature of built in browser
borders. The width or height attributes of the TD and TR tags don't
make much difference (although that may depend on what you want to
achieve).

PS. I don't think "whatever" was in the HTML Specification :-)
